From the AFP eWire, published by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)

Nearly 90 percent of Canadian millionaires intend to make a financial contribution to a charity this year, according to the Ipsos-Reid Affluent Canadians Report.

The report found that approximately 200,000 Canadians households have at least $1 million in household financial assets. Of the 87 percent of households that will contribute, a large majority (92 percent) will give to a charity that focuses on healthcare issues. Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) will contribute to organizations working on community needs, such as United Way or Easter Seals. Sixty-one percent will fund campaigns for local hospitals, while 57 percent will give to a church or religious organizations.

In addition, 52 percent are expected to volunteer time to a charity during the year. Nearly one-quarter of respondents said they weren't sure if they would volunteer, while another quarter indicated they would not be volunteering during the year.

The report is based on survey data from a randomly selected group of 198 Canadian adults who have at least $1 million in household financial assets. According to a press release about the report, Canadian millionaires represent approximately the top two percent of Canadians according to wealth.

Additional demographic data about this group of Canadians is also provided in the report. Fifty-seven percent of these individuals are retired, while 31 percent reported owning a business. The average age of the group is 61.5, although 15 percent are under the age of 45 and 36 percent are between the ages of 46 and 64.
